Which route makes sense for a first trip to the Cape Winelands?

For a first trip to the Cape Winelands, a loop from Cape Town to Stellenbosch, over Helshoogte Pass to Franschhoek and back via Paarl is enough. The distances are short: Stellenbosch is about 55 kilometres from Cape Town.

Can you take wine from the Cape Winelands home in your luggage?
