In the Winelands you either sleep where the wine grows or where the restaurants are. Both have their advantages. Which one wins usually comes down to the evening: how do you get back after dinner?
On a wine estate or in town?
Plenty of estates let rooms, from hotels to cottages. Spier has a hotel and spa on the Eerste River, Babylonstoren a hotel and spa between its garden and vineyards, and Laborie in Paarl a boutique hotel. Delaire Graff has lodges, Grande Provence vineyard suites and Rickety Bridge a manor house. Further out, Saronsberg lets cottages and Diemersfontein runs a guesthouse, as do Opstal and Excelsior.
The big advantage of an estate: after the tasting and dinner, you do not drive. With a legal limit of 0.05 g of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, that is more than a convenience. The drawback shows when you want to eat somewhere else. At remote estates you can wait 15 minutes or longer for an Uber in the evening, and sometimes none comes at all.
In town it is the other way round. In Stellenbosch and Franschhoek the restaurants are within walking distance, and in Franschhoek the Wine Tram leaves from Main Road in the centre. You just do not wake up among the vines.
When to book early
Peak season is the South African summer holiday, mid-December to mid-January. That is when South Africans travel themselves. For wine tours, November to April counts as high season; operators advise booking one to two weeks ahead then. For accommodation in that period, allow more time.
Keep an eye on festivals too. Franschhoek's Cap Classique and Champagne Festival takes place on 5 and 6 December 2026, and the Woordfees in Stellenbosch from 3 to 11 October. In winter, June to August, rooms are cheaper and restaurants with fireplaces come into their own.
Which region suits whom
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are the choice for a first trip and for a few days: 35 to 50 minutes from the airport to Stellenbosch, the most estates, the most beds, the most restaurants. Paarl and Wellington are about as close, a little quieter, and a good starting point if you want to head north over Bainskloof Pass. The pass has been partly open again since 10 July 2026, with traffic control (as of September 2026).
From Cape Town, Tulbagh and Ceres take one hour 40 to 50 minutes on an empty road. That is long for a day trip but right for a night or two: Church Street in Tulbagh in the evening, orchards, and in winter snow on the heights around Ceres. Beyond the Huguenot Tunnel the Breede Valley begins, with Worcester and Rawsonville, home to the Goudini hot springs.
For Robertson, McGregor and Montagu, stay in the valley itself. Robertson is around two hours' drive from Cape Town, and Montagu and McGregor are each about half an hour further. From here Route 62 carries on into the Klein Karoo. If you want real quiet, Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve rents out five self-catering cottages, and Montagu has the Klipspringer Cabin up in the mountains.

No car?
It can work, but only in the valleys close to Cape Town. Make Stellenbosch or Franschhoek your base. The Franschhoek Wine Tram offers transfers from Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Paarl with hotel pick-up. Uber generally works in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and Paarl has both Uber and Bolt, with longer waits.
From the airport, a pre-booked transfer is the easiest option, charged per vehicle; many places to stay can arrange one. At Cape Town airport, the German Foreign Office warns about illegal taxis with fake Uber badges. Metrorail's suburban trains do run to Stellenbosch, Paarl and Wellington, but the same advice says to avoid them. With luggage they are a last resort.
For Tulbagh, Robertson or Montagu you practically need a car. Exactly one train a day runs each way between Wellington and Worcester. For the stretch on into the Robertson valley, ask your host about a transfer.
