Someone carries lettuce from the food garden to the table, someone else is still waiting for bread from Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery. Wine has been made at Spier since 1692, and the estate says its cellar is the oldest dated cellar still in use in South Africa. The Enthoven family has owned Spier since 1993. The land includes 650 hectares of rehabilitated renosterveld and fynbos.

You come to taste and find reasons to stay. The restaurants are Veld and the Garden Room, and there are picnics, farm walks, a Segway tour through the vines, the Elemental Garden play area for children and an art collection (as of September 2026). The hotel on the Eerste River has 76 rooms and a spa with a Cape Herbal Bath House. Hotel and gallery reopened in March 2025 after renovation.
The local wine route carries Spier's mark too. In 1971 the estate was one of the four founders of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, the first wine route in the country.
