Worcester was founded as a seat of government. In 1818 Governor Lord Charles Somerset sent Landdrost Fischer from Tulbagh to find a new site; the farms De Lange Rug and Roodedraai were bought and surveyed in January 1819. The official founding date is 28 February 1820. According to English Wikipedia, 89 of 144 plots sold that day, while German Wikipedia speaks of the first 44. The town is named after the Marquis of Worcester, the governor's eldest brother. The drostdy moved here from Tulbagh in 1822. The railway followed in 1876.
Wine and brandy shape the surrounding farmland. Wines of South Africa calls Worcester the country's most important brandy-producing area, and in 1895 the Western Wine and Brandy Company opened its first distillery here, which passed to KWV in 1918. The KWV House of Brandy in Worcester is no longer open to the public, and when it closed could not be established (as of September 2026). SAWIS puts the Worcester wine district at 6,404 hectares of vines, led by Chenin Blanc (as of the end of 2025). How many wards it has is unclear: Wines of South Africa says seven, English Wikipedia four.

On Robertson Road the Kleinplasie open-air museum shows how tobacco was processed, coffee roasted and bread baked; open on weekdays and Saturday mornings, as of September 2026.
