Beyond Nuwekloof Pass a basin opens up, walled in by mountains on three sides. At the end of Church Street the gables are so white you would think someone limewashed them yesterday.

Saturday morning on Church Street. Two dogs lie in the shade of a stoep, coffee drifts out of an open door, and the kerb holds more pick-ups than hire cars. This single street has 32 listed buildings, Cape Dutch, Edwardian and Victorian façades side by side. English Wikipedia calls it possibly the largest number of such heritage sites on one street anywhere in South Africa.

The houses look fresh for a reason. On 29 September 1969 an earthquake destroyed much of Church Street, and all 32 houses were restored and protected afterwards. The Oude Kerk of 1743, now a folk museum, is older than the quake. The area used to be called Roodezand, red sand. Sources disagree on when Tulbagh was founded: the tourism office says 1699, German Wikipedia says 1700. The town is named after Governor Ryk Tulbagh, and here too the year varies between 1795 and 1804.

The basin is open to the south and closed everywhere else: the Obiqua range to the west, Groot Winterhoek to the north at 2,077 metres, the Witzenberg to the east. In summer a cooling south-easter pushes in, in winter cold air pools on the valley floor. WOSA counts around twelve estates and names two strengths: Shiraz and Cap Classique. At Krone (Twee Jonge Gezellen) only vintage sparkling wine ages in an underground cellar, Saronsberg focuses on Rhône varieties, and Rijk's makes nothing but Chenin Blanc and Pinotage from shale soils.

Tulbagh is about 123 kilometres north-east of Cape Town. Without traffic the drive via the N1, N7 and R46 takes around an hour and forty minutes; the local tourism office says ninety minutes.
