Springfield

In mid-May 2026 the Breede stood between Springfield's rows of vines. Where the rows usually run down towards the river, there was only water.

According to press reports, the May 2026 flood was the worst on the Breede in over 100 years, and on 13 May the river carried more than 2,000 cubic metres per second. Robertson itself had only 20 millimetres of rain, while upstream saw 200 to 300. At Springfield, 90 of the 220 hectares were under water. Sources differ on how much was lost outright: Harpers reports 15 hectares of newly planted vines washed away, while an Instagram post by the estate says "20 hectares completely gone".
